The importance of minor portfolios

The biggest risk to the Coalition Government is the lack of attention small problems will receive. Everyday system dysfunction is having a more detrimental effect on productivity and lifestyle than the headline issues.

The Courts, for example, are grappling with a backlog of cases due to the Courts closing during COVID-19. It now needs more resources than are available.

Action groups will try to slow down or publicly undermine the Government's legislative agenda – such as the reform of the Sentencing Act 2002, administered jointly by the Justice Minister, and the introduction to Parliament of a Treaty Principles Bill.

Success in these details and operations depends entirely on the competence and political smarts of inexperienced junior ministers.

Fortunately for Courts, incoming Minister, Hon Nicole McKee, couldn't be a better pick, having won Blackland PR's Communicator of the Year award in 2020.
