Is that a real Swanndri?

Updated: Jun 17, 2024

National MPs marched into Fieldays wearing matching blue-checkered Swanndris without a speck of cow doo on them.

An affinity for kitschy uniforms has become a theme for the Party, which may believe it has mastered contemporary identity politics.

The party’s costume department clearly think a printing press and a steady stream of t-shirts unlocks the ability to subscribe to any belief system Kiwis might hold dear – and thus receive that group’s support.

Although we are aware of the power symbols can have, we remain proponents of the real. If National really was the party of farmers, MPs would have a Swanndri sitting in the wardrobe already – rips, mud and all.
