We may have finally reached ‘peak Folau’. After a year of controversy, news that he has now signed with a French team and some posturing from critics was met with silence from the public.
This may be due to the matter being brought to some sort of conclusion last year by a settlement with Australian Rugby, in which his right to express views was upheld. It may also be due to a general public exhaustion on the matter. Folau has been vindicated in sticking to his point of view and right to express it. Eventually the critics have gone away.
But his experience has also warned about what can happen if you express views contrary to what is deemed socially acceptable. Very few of us would have the chin required to face such sustained controversy.
